Police Nab Man for R*ping and Killing Pastor’s Pregnant Wife



The Rivers State Police Command has apprehended a suspect named Emeka, accused of leading a gang in the assault and subsequent death of Mrs. Chigbewejim Steward, the pregnant wife of a pastor in the Abarikpo community of Ahoada East Local Government Area. The incident occurred on February 12, 2023.

After quarreling with Mrs. Steward earlier in the day, Emeka allegedly broke into her house at midnight with his gang, kidnapped her, and took her to an unknown location. Following the attack, Emeka fled the community upon learning that the police were searching for him.


Lawyer Steward, an Assistant Pastor with the Seventh Day Adventist Church in Abarikpo, confirmed Emeka's arrest to newsmen on Thursday. He recounted, "Yes, Emeka masterminded the death of my wife after she called him a wicked man. He responded, 'You will see wickedness today.' That night around 1 AM, those criminals came to my house, broke down the door, and took my wife away. She was five months pregnant. Emeka and his gang raped and strangled her to death. The police arrested him on Thursday, and now he is in custody. I have given my statement at the station. I urge the government to ensure justice is served. I thank the police for their efforts in arresting these criminals."


Steward alleged that Emeka and his gang are members of the cult group 'In Iceland.' He stated that after kidnapping his wife, they took her to their hideout, where they raped and killed her. Her body was discovered with multiple bruises and signs of severe trauma near a fishing pond several hours after her abduction. Mrs. Steward was known for her vocal condemnation of criminal and cult activities in the Abarikpo community.

When contacted, the spokesperson for the State Police Command, Grace Iringe-Koko, said she would verify details with the Divisional Police Officer but had not responded by the time of this report on Friday morning. A senior police officer, speaking anonymously, confirmed that in addition to Emeka, two other suspects were also arrested in connection with the crime. "It was not only Emeka. Two others were also arrested by the Ahoada Police Division. They are all in custody," he stated.
